A Nova Scotia couple say they were just trying to have fun with this year’s harsh winter when they created their photo spoof of ‘American Gothic’ that took off online.

Rick and Bethe Cameron recreated the iconic Grant Wood painting with a Canadian twist last week, posing as farmers against a snowy backdrop for their photo titled ‘Nova Scotia Gothic.’ In the photo, the blank-faced Camerons are wearing conservative clothing, just as the farmers do in the ‘American Gothic’ painting. But where the man in the original painting is holding a pitchfork in front of a farmhouse, Rick is shown holding a broken shovel in his snow-covered backyard.

The photo went viral after it was posted to Imgur and Reddit, where it’s racked up approximately 2.8 million views in its first week online.

“I never thought it would take off like it did,” Bethe Cameron told CTV’s Canada AM via Skype on Friday. She says she and her husband were making spoof videos for YouTube on their deck when were inspired to lampoon ‘American Gothic’ with their broken snow shovel.

“We’re new to all the social media stuff, so we’re blown away,” she said.

Rick Cameron admits he was the one who broke the snow shovel shown in the photo. “I’ve actually broken two since then, and the snowblower,” he said.

The couple run a puzzle-making business, and they say they’ve already taken the next logical step with ‘Nova Scotia Gothic.’

They’ve made it into a puzzle available for purchase on their website.
