Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been named to Time magazine's prestigious list of the 100 most influential people in the world, joining a wide range of international leaders, artists, scientists, activists and athletes.

Trudeau was included on the list in Time's Leaders category, alongside the likes of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. President Barack Obama and several candidates for the U.S. presidential election.

Canadian and "Saturday Night Live" mogul Lorne Michaels penned a glowing piece on Trudeau for Time, saying: "I believe he will be a force for good."

Michaels, who lives in New York, suggests in his piece that Canada is no longer the way it was when he was young, "but when I hear Justin Trudeau talk, it sounds like my Canada again. Bold, clear as a bell and progressive."

Bryan Walsh, Time's international editor, told CTV's Canada AM on Thursday that the list is compiled based on who people "look up to."

Walsh said Time selects individuals who "are not just leaders, but people who are sort of pushing the boundaries of where the world is going."

He added that being named to the list is not necessarily an endorsement of their positive role in the world. "Just because you're on this list doesn't mean you're perfect," he said. "Obviously someone like Vladimir Putin is on this list, (North Korean dictator) Kim Jong Un – they're having influence, perhaps not for the most positive reasons."

The list includes influential people from many different fields, such as gynecologist Denis Mukwege, who Walsh lauded for helping the victims of war rape in Africa.

Time's Pioneers category includes "Hamilton" musical star Lin-Manuel Miranda, Muslim-American Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, Caitlyn Jenner, and Swedish YouTuber Felix Kjellberg, a.k.a. "PewDiePie."

LucasFilm boss Kathleen Kennedy, NBA superstar Steph Curry and Pope Francis are among those listed in the Titans category, while singer Kendrick Lamar, comedic actress Melissa McCarthy and Bollywood-Hollywood star Priyanka Chopra are on the Artists list. MMA star Ronda Rousey, actor Leonardo DiCaprio, Adele and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu are listed in the Icons category.

Time's 100 Most Influential People issue hits newsstands on Friday, with six different covers. The covers feature DiCaprio, Chopra, Miranda, Nicki Minaj, International Monetary Fund boss Christine Lagarde, and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg with his wife, Priscilla Chan.
