From the time we are knee-high, we’re taught that honesty is the best policy – and a new book based on a Twitter account has taken that moral code to hilarious new heights.

Montreal-area mom Bunmi Laditan has just released The Honest Toddler: A Child’s Guide to Parenting, which voices the thoughts of a toddler in an articulate and comical way.

The mother of two came up with the concept when her youngest child turned two and started “sharing” her opinions.

“It just started with a Twitter account,” Laditan told CTV’s Canada AM. “We had a difficult week when she transitioned … from baby to toddler, saying ‘no,’ tons of arguments about pants, about toast, about socks.”

Calling the Twitter account a “cathartic” release, Laditan said she thinks her toddler-voiced take “interjects humour into those difficult moments that we’ve all been through.”

Meant to be voiced from the perspective of a young child, her account, @HonestToddler, has already amassed more than 235,000 followers since its inception in May 2012.  It chosen as one of TIME’s best Twitter feeds of 2013.

Among the words of wisdom Laditan’s already shared in 140 characters or less: “Parent Tip: Please don’t call it ‘fake crying.’ We prefer the term ‘enhanced emotional response.’ Thank you.”

And another, which is one of Laditan’s favourites: “ ‘All you need is love.’ See? Nothing about pants.”

When asked if people take child-rearing too seriously, Laditan said that it’s impossible not to.

“This person comes out of you and you love them and you want to do everything you can to help them – you want them to be happy. It is the biggest responsibility most people will have in their entire lives,” she said.

“Toddlers can teach us a lot. I think their main lesson is that they`re courageous. If you think of how small they are in comparison to us they`ll stand up to us over and over,” she added.

Laditan is expecting her third child in two weeks – and is certain more comic fodder will follow.

“That’s right. I just keep on having kids so I can supply my Twitter feed with good tweets,” she said, laughing.

Honest Toddler: A Child`s Guide to Parenting (Harper Collins) is on shelves now at a cost of around $20.
