Of all the topics covered and the interviews with guests over the last 40 years, Canada AM hosts share the stories that stayed with them the most.

THE STORY THAT NEVER LEFT ME WAS…

The tainted blood scandal, Janet Connors fighting for compensation after her and her husband Randy were both infected with AIDS. – Valerie Pringle

All the major breaking news stories such as the resignation of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and the L.A. riots meant the entire newscast team scrambled to get the best information and best guests on the air both for the newscast and the entire broadcast at large. Besides that my favourite experiences involved the times when we all relaxed with the musical segments and cooking demonstrations. I will never forget tasting one of the world’s best balsamic vinegars, valued at about $100 for a few ounces; and celebrating pre-New Year’s Eve with champagne tastings on-set. – Thalia Assuras

We did an interview with Daniel Day Lewis in late '87 or early '88 when he was promoting The Incredible Lightness of Being. We had him on for about 20 minutes because another guest bailed. He was so shy and really odd but it was a fascinating encounter and he never does interviews these days. It was quite memorable for me. – Nancy Wilson

THE NICEST PERSON I EVER INTERVIEWED WAS…

The nicest person I ever interviewed was Paul McCartney. He walked in and introduced himself to the crew! Most celebrities are there to talk about themselves and their work/career. Paul wanted to ask about me and how I was doing. I was taken aback - and THEN HE HUGGED ME. – Beverly Thomson

Matt Damon – Seamus O’Regan

Lionel Richie. Hands down. Humble. No entourage. No holds barred. Love him. – Marci Ien

THE GUEST THAT I WISH I’D BEEN ABLE TO GET WAS…

I wish I had been able to interview Benazir Bhutto. We were planning on an interview before she was killed. – Beverly Thomson

Trooper..seriously, Trooper. – Jeff Hutcheson

Oprah. We almost had her when she came to Toronto recently to tape her life class. Here's hoping we nab her next time. – Marci Ien

Nelson Mandela – Valerie Pringle

Nelson Mandela – Thalia Assuras

THE BEST THING ABOUT LIVE TV IS…

If something goes according to plan in a remote situation, that’s good. If something screws up on air..that’s even better! – Jeff Hutcheson

Live TV is anything goes; as in anything can and does happen. But above all, the very best thing is developing news and the race to get the latest and the best while on the air! – Beverly Thomson

The spontaneity! We never know what is going to happen--but good things do when we go off script. – Marci Ien

That it’s live and anything can happen – and it does! – Thalia Assuras

The best thing about live is that when the red button is on, it's all you baby. – Seamus O’Regan

Whatever happens, happens. No doing it over. – Valerie Pringle

The spontaneity, one never knows what will be said. – Wally Macht
