ROME - Italian authorities say a Bosnian man has been arrested for allegedly selling his daughter for more than 10,000 euros (US$13,300) for marriage to a cousin.
Authorities on Monday described the arrest three days earlier as the first under a new law to combat forced marriages. Police thwarted the deal and the marriage didn't happen.
Police say the family lived in a Roma trailer camp in the northwestern city of Pisa. Italian authorities say the father beat the woman, 21, and her younger sister when they rebelled, and fed them only bread and water.
The father allegedly arranged to marry the elder daughter to a cousin living in the camp and planned to do similarly with the younger daughter.
Investigators say they clandestinely filmed the alleged payoff to the prospective groom.
