Winter is most definitely here early this year! So if you are looking to get some sun over the next few months, what should you know?

Every season is a bit different, but it would appear that after last year’s “polar vortex” winter, people are anxious to get their taste of sun and have already been booking. I am sure this past week has made people even more anxious! Packaged holidays are also more popular than ever. So if you want to have your choice of destination and dates this season, now is the time to book.  If you wait until the last minute your options will be fairly limited.

In terms of hot spots…Cuba is upping its game. Although there is no consistent star rating system among the various Caribbean destinations and the tour operators that serve them, it is fairly common knowledge that a five-star resort in Cuba is not up to the same standard as elsewhere in the Caribbean.  However the tide is changing, as many of the hotel chains are slowly changing their standards. The anticipation of the island eventually opening up to the American tourist market means better service, amenities and food now at the higher end resorts. The Melia Marina in Varadero is getting incredible reviews, offering full apartments for families at reasonable prices.

Another trend is the growth of adult only resorts or sections of resorts. People are growing tired of being lumped in together aka. the meat grinder vacation. A line has been drawn in the sand by consumers who are not travelling with their families and looking for some couple time versus spending their vacation surrounded by other people’s kids. The couples only Sandals LaSource Grenada is getting amazing reviews, especially for their rooms with individual infinity edge pools.  The recently opened Occidental Grand Papagayo in Costa Rica is garnering buzz as the first adults only resort in the country. Aruba’s well-reputed Riu Palace has just opened the Riu Palace Antillas, a sister property catering to this market on the land adjacent to the current resort.

Happily there will not be many destinations in recovery mode this winter as the 2014 hurricane season has been a relatively tame one. Fingers crossed it stays that way for the next month.  The big exception of course is Mexico’s Cabo San Lucas, which was hit extremely hard about two months ago. The good news is they have reopened the airport much earlier than anticipated and resorts are working hard to get back to normal.  Check with a travel agent on repair status before planning a trip there this winter.

If you are looking for a cruise holiday, costs vary widely depending on the type of holiday you are booking but plan on spending at least $175 per person per day including taxes. And again with prices on the rise and limited last minute offers expected, now is the time to book.  The age of the mega ship continues but remember size matters. Larger cruise ships may have a seemingly unlimited number of bells and whistles, but with those come the crowds.  Be prepared to share your holiday with thousands of other vacationers.Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas is the latest to hit the waves. Unique features include a sky dive simulator, bumper cars and indoor staterooms with have a virtual sea view; no window but outdoor images broadcast on your wall.  The ship’s North Star is a jewel shaped pod that extends above the ship and out over the water offering a unique vantage point for photographers.

Cruise lines such as Windstar and Paul Gauguin have smaller ships in their fleet. They offer less in terms of on board amenities than the larger ships but with the decreased size comes the ability to explore smaller ports and offer unique experiences. Last December the Louis Cristal began offering a seven- night sailing circumnavigating Cuba. This well-priced cruise is perfect for people looking for a mix of sun and culture.

Lastly, know the on-board culture of your ship and pick a cruise line that suits your style. While Royal Caribbean targets active travellers with on board basketball courts, rock climbing walls and zip lines, Oceania has found its niche with taste-makers and foodies. Disney’s teen clubs, family themed shows and nurseries are great for family fun. Crystal Cruises is a high-end experience; not as formal as Cunard but with the same first-class service. If you are looking for Vegas on the waves, check out Carnival Cruise Lines.
