Ready to warm up your winter? If you want to book travel in the next two months, remember that for last minute trips you need to be flexible on departure dates, destination, resort, room types and be ready to book quickly as there may only be a few seats or rooms left.

Smaller and higher end islands like Aruba, St Martin or Barbados tend to sell out in advance. You are more likely to find a last minute trip to Cuba, Mexico's Mayan Riviera or Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. For pricing on an All-Inclusive if you can find something for under $2,000 including taxes you are doing well.

For cruises the Eastern Caribbean itineraries from either Ft Lauderdale or Miami tend to be the most popular but the Southern Caribbean itineraries from San Juan might be better priced. Unfortunately by this late in the game, although you might find a reasonably priced cruise, the flight prices are usually higher in this short of a booking window.

I recently went to Cancun and was pleasantly surprised. I knew it was a more affordable option, but didn't realize how smart, sleek and appealing it is. There is lots to do, the beach is great and the price is right. I stayed at the Paradisus Cancun Resort, which includes accommodation, all drinks and three meals a day at your choice of nine restaurants.  They are currently offering rates of approximately $400 per day in a double occupancy Deluxe Junior suite.

It is important to note as well that with the falling Canadian dollar, most tour operators are adding a 'currency surcharge' of about $35 per person.  Transat Holidays, Nolitours, Air Canada Vacations, Sunwing Vacations and Signature Vacations have all instituted the charge in the last week. Westjet Vacations so far has not…thank you Westjet!

Whichever one you decided to book, make sure to read the fine print and know what is included.
