River cruising is the fastest growing segment of the travel industry with new ships coming on every year. And having spent some time aboard one in Holland a couple of years ago, I understand why. They truly offer a unique, relaxed and decadent way to travel. Although the most popular routes are in Europe, there are sailings available in other countries such as China, Russia and Vietnam.

Why is a river cruise different? The ships offer a more intimate experience, as many of them only have capacity for 150 to 200 guests versus an ocean liner, which typically has a 1,000 plus guests onboard.  You get to know other travelling companions easier and you don't need to worry about standing in long lines to embark, disembark or to enjoy a meal. River cruising also provides easy access to the destinations. At many stops you can just wander into town from the dock or else there is a short coach ride to a city centre. With such close proximity to the towns and villages along the rivers, you have the advantage of experiencing the specialty food and wine of the regions. Each day there is a different destination and sometimes two stops in one day.  There are no long days at sea.

More and more as the river cruise industry explodes the various companies are trying to differentiate themselves with different offerings and items included. At the top end is Scenic Tours. They appear to be on the pricey end on paper but bear in mind they are also the only true All-Inclusive river cruise company. They include everything in their prices from alcohol, guided tours to special experiences, such as a private concert of Mozart and Strauss music in Vienna's Palais Liechtenstein. Questions you should ask when it comes time to book:

  • What age is the ship?
  • Do the cabins have full private outdoor balconies, or just French balconies?  A balcony is lovely to have!
  • What sightseeing is included?
  • Do you have to pay for optional extras?
  • Are tipping/gratuities included, both on and off shore?
  • Are airport transfers included?
  • Are all drinks included, at any time or is it just beer, wine and soft drinks included with meals?  Is this unlimited?
  • How many dining venues are onboard?  Are there any specialty restaurants?  Is there an additional charge for these?
  • Do they provide butler service?
  • Are there complimentary bicycles available for use?
  • Are there any special evenings or experiences included?  Do you have to pay extra?

The other big players in the river cruise world are Uniworld, AMA, Viking and Avalon. My trip was on the Avalon Felicity. It was great. Emerald Waterways is the latest company to hit the rivers. It is  more of a four star product with a lower price point to help differentiate itself. Emerald is trying to attract a younger demographic and is a less expensive river cruise, but again it includes fewer amenities and services.

If you are in Ontario there are a number of free information sessions being put on by Scenic throughout the province this month. Check it out to learn more.
