With the weather turning and kids less interested in outdoor activities parents may want to consider a visit to one of our country’s great kid-friendly museums.

The Western Development Museum in Saskatoon is one of the best I have seen.

The principle exhibit is Boomtown, a re-creation of a typical prairie town circa 1910. Kids will love the opportunity to chat with blacksmiths, sit in a vintage car and dress up in the photography studio.

For older kids and adults, there is a fantastic exhibit on the immigrant experience from arrival to present day.

The Canadian Children’s Museum is housed within the Canadian Museum of History (formerly known as the Canadian Museum of Civilization) in Gatineau, just across the Ottawa River from Ottawa.

Within the museum's walls kids can travel the world; play with shadow puppets from Thailand, try on a kimono from Japan, relax in a Bedouin camp, shop a market in France or drive a brightly-coloured Pakistani bus. Fill up the passport given upon arrival with stamps as a souvenir of your visit.

The Montreal Science Centre offers some widely accessible and interactive exhibitions, which are perfect for kids. They just launched Dinosaurs Unearthed 2 (the sequel to the aptly named Dinosaurs Unearthed), which will go on until March 2016.

It has plenty of physical elements to keep children interested with 14 full-size animatronic dinosaurs, 20 fossils and two skeletons recreating two excavation sites. Part of the exhibition also gives children control of a dinosaur to explore various sites.

Fabrik is a challenging workshop where kids have to take on creative challenges involving invention and assembly-work. The museum's theatre is currently presenting Living in the Age of Airplanes and Cousteau’s Ocean Life. The museum is located in the quays of Old Montreal.

The Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria makes learning easy by presenting the natural and social history of the province in highly realistic and immersive settings.

From a woolly mammoth in his rocky, icy world to a trip on the tar-scented HMS Discovery kids will be easily charmed by this first-class museum. A stroll through Old Town's wood-cobbled street complete with shops, cinema and a railway station is like being in a giant dollhouse. There are educators throughout the family friendly facility ready to answer any questions your eager learners might have.

Children visiting Toronto have to see the dinosaur exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum. The ROM has brilliant child and family programming and events. Not cheap but you can’t go wrong.

There are discounted tickets and admissions on Fridays from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and general admission free to secondary school students on Tuesdays. The big temporary exhibit at the moment is all about Pompeii.
