Slippers: The xmas gift with heart and 'sole'

Slippers - let's face it, have always suffered from a bad reputation. They're like the minivans of footwear. Comfy, roomy, practical and typically, not so stylish. Rarely has anyone every bragged about owning them, let alone showed them off outside of the home...until now. All hail the new generation of fashion footwear - slippers for indoors and (gasp!) out. Today's tootsies deserve luxe pampering and I've found some fashionable faves for all types of feet. From high-end socially-conscious brands like Canada's own Manitobah Mukluks (disclaimer: I own them, love them, wear them, want them!), to affordable little booties you can heat up to warm and soothe even the bluest of trembling toes after an afternoon on the toboggan hill. Don't forget to treat your feet this holiday season - after all, they've been traipsed around the malls, jammed into stilettos, forced to march across hard flooring, and basically ignored for far too long. Best of all, traditional, classic mukluks and moccasins are mainstream fashion once again - so don't even think about banishing them to the bedside.

There are several ways in which Manitobah contributes to Aboriginal communities:

CAHRD - The Center for Aboriginal Human Resource Development: on an ongoing basis Manitobah partners with CAHRD to provide an annual education bursary that supports an Aboriginal student to attend a post-secondary institution. Manitobah has also hired individuals through CAHRD to work in-house with the brand.
The Storyboot Project: This not-for-profit project aims to revive the traditional art form of mukluk-making by creating partnerships with elders and artisans who create mukluks and moccasins the traditional way. These artisans hand-make a limited collection called Storyboots which are sold through Manitobah and its retailers including Nordstrom and Holt Renfrew's The H Project. For every Storyboot sold, the artist receives 100% of the proceeds.
The Storyboot School: A new initiative launched this year, whereby Aboriginal youth are given the opportunity to learn the traditional art form of mukluk-making from Aboriginal artisans. It it's inaugural year, Aboriginal artisans have invested more than 1,600 hours teaching over 80 Aboriginal youth the intricate and detailed traditional art of mukluk-making.
