One of the great advantages of growing a garden in containers is that a call of frost is easily dealt with: just put them in your garage or any sheltered space!

When planting, be sure to match the plants up with the exposure of the container/pot over the growing season.  This morning on Canada AM I am planting the following:

For Sun: petunias, ‘million Bells, a large dahlia in the middle and some sunshine impatience. Other sun lovers that are suitable for containers include geraniums, portulaca, bidens and all of the ivies.

For Shade:  begonias (tuberous and fibrous), coleous and fuschia (many different kinds to choose from!)

To ensure success be sure to use a quality container mix (I am using Pro Mix, with an all-season slow release fertilizer and a water retainer to reduce applications of water throughout the summer).

Your container should always be well drained, with generous sized drainage holes. A ‘pot hole’ works wonders!

And finally, choose a container that is large enough to provide space for your chosen plants to grow. Remember that the larger the pot/hanging basket, the longer between water applications! Important to remember if you plan to be away some weekends.
