Sometimes updating your kitchen can be as simple as adding some new accessories in trend colours. Here are a few styling tricks to give your kitchen an updated, trend-worthy look:
- Use multiples containers that match. Storing your coffee, tea and cereal on the counter? Buy 3 of the same style containers for continuity and to streamline the many different elements that sit on our kitchen counters. The same rule applies when adding storage containers above upper cupboards; consider 4-5 matching wicker baskets or ceramic ginger jars that all match. The continuity will help create a simple, modern feel to the space.
- Co-ordinate with what you already have. If you have outdated coloured countertops then don't ignore them. My suggestion is to choose an updated co-ordinated colour to help update the kitchen. For instance, if you have dusty-rose countertops then choose green accessories (green is opposite to pink on the colour wheel). The Canada AM kitchen has beautiful Bala Blue quartz counters (from Cambria) so we chose elements of warm yellow tones to compliment; yellow is also an emerging trend colour for 2013..
- Blend your books. If you have a few favorite cookbooks in the kitchen you can co-ordinate them into your decor scheme by making book jackets out of sturdy trend-coloured wrapping paper or sturdy cloth. I like to use vinyl tablecloth material as book covers; its wipeable and comes in a variety of designs. I create book jackets with themes too; my Christmas holiday cookbooks are protected with sturdy holiday wrapping paper.
- Blend fresh greenery with artificial. Adding faux greenery helps to cut costs of always have fresh and ensures a lush look on the counter.
