Life hacks: they're the simple steps meant to make your life easier, but many of the popular ones don't always work the way they're intended to. Founder of Pretty Frugal Living, Amrita Singh, put some summer-themed life hacks to the test and brought them to Canada AM.

DIY Chocolate Crackle for Ice Cream!

recipe:

  • 1 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/3 cup chocolate chips

Melt coconut oil and chocolate in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Whisk until smooth, then drizzle over top of your ice cream. Wait a few seconds before enjoying. The chocolate will harden with the coolness of the ice cream and crackle when you're ready to eat! Store any leftover sauce in the fridge and reheat it in the microwave before using again.

How to Cube Watermelon in a Flash!

The key is to have sharp, long and flexible knife. Cut the watermelon in half, lengthwise. Then cut three horizontal slits on the outside of the watermelon. Run the knife along the rind area, and score inside of the watermelon. Flip over on to a cutting board and whack! The result: perfectly cubed watermelon!

Homemade Fruit Fly Traps!

Put a few small pieces of fruit into a bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and poke one or two small holes in the top. That's it! The flies will find their way into the bowl but won't be able to find their way out. The best tip for avoiding fruit flies entirely? Keep fruits in the fridge and/or covered whenever possible. I find bananas are the biggest fruit fly attractor.

Make Your Own BBQ Seasoning!
