As we approach that time when the kids are released from school for the summer I am sure that every parent is thinking, "What now?"

While camp and day care or sending your kids to a loving relative may be in the plans, why not consider spending some time with your kids in the garden.  There, they will discover the power of a seed, the wonder of bird song and the profound effect that good soil and sunshine has on the green, growing world around them.  Indeed, they will become more aware of the green, growing world!

Start with some easy to germinate seeds: sunflowers, morning glories, zinnias, pumpkins (if you have the space), carrots, beans, peas and radishes. Oh, those radishes!  If you are just starting out be sure to sow some radishes - they germinate in about a week: even the most impatient of kids will get a thrill out their appearance through the surface of the soil at that rate.  And you can begin harvesting in 40 days with most varieties.

For colour and non-stop action sow some sunflowers.  All you need is good soil and lots of sunshine.  There are some short growing varieties like 'TeddyBear' that do not take a lot of space and even grow quite well in large containers.

Be sure to let kids feel the earth, hold the seeds and to personally push them into the soil.  Instruct them to water gently and resist the temptation to do it for them It is the experience of feeling that they have done this themselves that will make all of the difference.  And who knows, maybe one day they will reflect on their very first garden experience with you while they plant a garden in their own yard.
