There are lots of herbs: a banana is a herb, by definition.  But from my point of view there are 3 basic kinds of herbs: Mediterranean herbs that like a hot, dry location, Vegetative herbs like basil that require reasonable moisture and sun and the nuisance herbs that won't generally behave themselves without you watching over them full time.

The 'hot and dry' herbs include thyme, rosemary, dill and sage.  These are well suited to growing in containers just outside of the kitchen door.

The vegetative herbs also love sun but require more moisture and therefore more of your attention.  They produce well in containers but if you are away on weekends for extended periods of time they produce best in the garden where they can be mulched and require less watering.

The third category includes all of the mints and oregano which travel throughout your garden like it is a full time party.  Dig them out as you please or use lots of them just to keep them in check.  No harm to them as they really have ambition to take over the world.
