The Best Tomatoes on the Block (or, at your local fall fair!)

Follow this recipe and you won't go wrong:

  1. choose the sunniest spot in your garden [min. 6 hours sun]
  2. buy a strong, deep green stocky plant - it will take off in your soil!  Avoid the long, lanky ones.
  3. plant in ¾ of a bushel of compost and/or triple mix and make sure that the location is well drained… wet roots = dead plant
  4. plant deep - push the plant down into the soil to make firm contact with it and bury the stem up to the first set of true leaves.
  5. stake it to support it off the ground - you will double your crop
  6. mulch it with shredded bark mulch or 30 cm. of clean straw mid June or so.  Reduce watering by up to 70 per cent and weeding by up to 90 per cent
  7. water deeply but let the plant get dry between watering about 3 cm. below soil level.
  8. apply Green Earth Bordo mixuture [organic gardeners use it]  Prevent early and late blight.  Apply ever 2 weeks beginning in late June through August.

Harvest often!
