We are now well past spring: planting time. And into Hammock Time for gardeners.

It is not that there isn't a lot to do in the garden, cause there is. Weeding, pruning, watering (when it isn't raining) BUT even gardeners need to take the time to drink in the results of our labours. For me this means reading a good book, magazine or periodical about my favourite topic (gardening) while enjoying the background music of hummingbirds and the breeze in the trees. This is hammock time and every one of us has earned the right.

Be sure that you equip yourself with reading material that is worthy of your time. I like the Harrowsmith 'Truly Canadian' Almanac for this purpose. Not that I would ever read it from cover to cover in a sitting but I do refer to it for great gardening tips, weather forecasts and (if I lived on the coast) the tidal tables.

Another 'must read' is my monthly edition of Gardens West/Central and West. That is one publication that is edited and distributed to each of the three major growing zones in the country. It is such a great way to get accurate, colourful and fun gardening stories that are specific and appropriate to my growing zone.

There are many picture books that are worthy of a browse and always a great way to get new design ideas for my own garden. Check out Jardins Prives du Quebec (Private Gardens of Quebec) by Perry Mastrovito. Just published this spring. There is a garden gate and garden on page 58 that I want.

Seems whenever I indulge in 'hammock time' I end up with a lot of things that I 'want'.  Such is the art of dreaming.

It is summer: dream
