From running to riding, snowshoeing to skiing, winter sports require the right wardrobe - both for performance and warmth

Generally there are four things to consider when it comes to outdoor winter activities:

  • Function - does it wick away moisture, windproof, water-resistant, etc.
  • Comfort - slim fitting, easy to move in, easy to ventilate, etc.
  • Safety - layering, moisture management, reflectors, bright colours at night, etc.
  • Style - you want to feel comfortable in your outfit because if you don't enjoy wearing it, you won't enjoy going out to do the activity... plus part of the fun is the after part of the fun… the ski chalet, the post-run coffee, etc.

Sticking with slim, form-fitting layers will ensure that your clothes won't get in the way of a great cold-weather run. With icy conditions, it's important that you have the right footwear and earlier nightfall means that reflective gear becomes that much more important.

Cross-country skiing involves a lot of movement that will generate a lot of body heat. Wearing layers of thin breathable materials that wick away sweat will ensure that you keep warm and comfortable on the trail.

Like cross country-country skiing, layering is important when snowshoeing but you may also want to consider a light, packable down jacket for warmer days or breaks on the trail. Also, in deep snow conditions, consider waterproof snow pants and boots to keep your socks and feet dry and warm.

Because you are moving at faster speeds, winter cycling is all about windproofing and waterproofing. Gloves that allow you to change gears and brake easily are key along with shoe covers that will keep slush and snow out of your shoes. Also, because bike helmets are vented and fit snuggly, a warm, wick-away skull cap will help you avoid brainfreeze.
